Me Time: Kevin Hart’s Bromance Caper Offers Laughs Amidst Clumsy Humor and Heart

    BuryBy BuryJuly 26, 2023Updated:July 26, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Kevin Hart is back with another Netflix comedy caper, “Me Time,” where he teams up with Mark Wahlberg for a grown-up version of “Risky Business.” As a stay-at-home dad given a week of freedom, Hart’s character navigates a blend of funny and cringe-worthy situations that result in mixed laughter. While the film showcases endearing themes of friendship and unconventional marriages, it also struggles with over-plotting and occasionally poor CGI. Despite its flaws, “Me Time” manages to deliver some genuine laughs and heartwarming moments, making it worth a watch for fans of middle-brow comedy.

A Tale of Unconventional Marriages and Friendship

In “Me Time,” Hart plays Sonny, an affectionate Mr. Mom, who finds himself leading an atypical heterosexual marriage, with his wife, Maya (Regina Hall), as the successful breadwinner. The film refrains from falling into clichés by portraying Sonny as a content and skillful homemaker, managing his role as the primary caregiver for their kids with enthusiasm. It’s refreshing to see a movie that doesn’t demonize a career-driven woman, as Maya struggles with balancing her professional aspirations and family life. This gender-balanced perspective emphasizes societal acceptance for both men and women to pursue their careers guilt-free.

The Comedic Twist with Huck and Armando

Sonny’s old friend Huck (Mark Wahlberg) enters the picture, adding an extra layer of comedy and adventure. Despite their contrasting lifestyles, the chemistry between Huck and Sonny is evident as they engage in various escapades. The introduction of Armando (Luis Gerardo Méndez), the eccentric eco-billionaire, brings Hank Azaria’s scuba instructor from “Along Came Polly” to mind, providing the film with winsome laughs. The dynamics between the characters, especially Maya and Armando, create amusing moments that resonate with viewers.

A Bumpy Ride with Structural Issues

However, “Me Time” faces structural problems that hinder its overall flow. The pacing stumbles when reintroducing Huck in the second act, and the film struggles to find a perfect balance amidst numerous side characters. Moreover, the occasional poor CGI, particularly the mountain lion scene, detracts from the movie’s visual appeal.

Verdict: A Mix of Laughter and Heart

“Me Time” might not be a perfect comedy, but it manages to charm audiences with its unique blend of humor and heartfelt moments. Kevin Hart’s charisma shines through, and the film celebrates unconventional marriages and genuine friendships. While some jokes fall flat, the camaraderie between the characters compensates for the film’s flaws. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted comedy that explores the complexities of modern relationships, “Me Time” is worth your time.
